Portuguese and Brazilian Studies

About Pessoa Plural (English)

Pessoa Plural was established in 2012 as an international peer-reviewed scholarly journal dedicated to studies of Fernando Pessoa.

We publish two issues per year through the joint publishing efforts of the Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies at Brown University, the Department of English and Comparative Literary Studies at Warwick University and the Department of Humanities and Literature of the University of the Andes. We welcome submissions in the form of essays, documents and commissioned book reviews.

We are an open access journal, and all of our digital archives can be accessed for free through Brown's Digital Repository. We abide by the COPE Code of Conduct for all issues related to Ethics and Publication Malpractice. Here you will find Pessoa Plural's ethical statement, the details of our peer review process, and our submission guidelines.

Submission Guidelines

Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement

Pessoa Plural – A Journal of Fernando Pessoa Studies is an international, peer-reviewed scholarly journal, committed to ensuring the highest standards of publication ethics. All parties involved in the act of publishing (editors, authors, reviewers and the publisher) have to agree upon standards of ethical behavior. We state the following principles of Publication Ethics and Publication Malpractice Statement based on the Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors of the Committee on Publication Ethics – COPE.

Responsibilities of the Editors and Editorial Board of Pessoa Plural

The editors and the editorial board of Pessoa Plural are responsible for:

  • Deciding which of the manuscripts submitted to the journal should be published. In making these decisions, they are guided by the policies of the journal (listed here) and by legal requirements regarding libel, copyright infringement, and plagiarism.
  • Providing guidance to guest editors, authors and reviewers on everything that is expected of them and also a description of the peer review processes.
  • Providing new editorial board members with guidelines on everything that is expected of them and keeping existing members updated on new policies and developments.
  • Evaluating manuscripts exclusively on the basis of their academic and intellectual merit. The author(s)’ race, age, gender, sexual orientation, disability, ethnic origin, religious belief, citizenship, political orientation or social class must not be allowed to shape the evaluation process in any way.
  • Ensuring a fair and unbiased double-blind peer review of the manuscripts and that all information related to them is kept confidential. Editors also ensure that both authors’ and peer reviewers’ identities are protected. They must not disclose any information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, other editorial advisers, and the publisher, as appropriate.
  • Ensuring that appropriate reviewers considered experts in the subject-matter are selected.
  • Developing and maintaining a database of suitable reviewers and updating it on the basis of reviewer performance.
  • Ensuring that unpublished materials disclosed in a submitted manuscript are not used in an editor’s own research without the express written consent of the author.
  • Taking reasonable responsive measures when ethical complaints are presented concerning a submitted or published manuscript. In cases of suspected misconduct, they must follow the COPE flowcharts
  • Publishing corrections, clarifications, retractions and apologies whenever needed.
  • Communicating to authors regarding the acceptance of their work in time (two months).

Guest Editors' Responsibilities

Guest editors are responsible for:

  • Defining the subject matter and role of every article in a thematic issue.
  • Providing clear guidelines to authors regarding the topic and boundaries of their contributions and the overall design of the issue.
  • Ensuring, in collaboration with the executive editorial board, that appropriate reviewers considered experts in the subject-matter are selected for all the articles (whether they have been commissioned or submitted as a result of a call for papers).
  • Establishing, in collaboration with the executive editorial board, a timeline for draft paper submission, peer review, revision and final paper submission, and ensuring that all deadlines are met.
  • Writing the Introduction to the issue.

Authors’ Responsibilities

  • Authors of research papers should present an accurate account of the work performed, as well as an objective discussion of its significance. All data and all quotations should be represented accurately in the manuscript. Fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements or quotations constitute unethical behavior and are unacceptable.
  • Authors must ensure that they have written original works and that any work or words of other authors, contributors or sources have been appropriately credited and referenced.
  • Plagiarism in all its forms constitutes unethical publishing behavior and is unacceptable. Plagiarism is defined as repeating another’s wording as one’s own; adopting a particularly apt phrase as one’s own; paraphrasing someone else’s argument as one’s own; presenting someone else’s line of thinking as one’s own; similarly, wording, arguments or lines of thinking of the author used in a different work must have their corresponding credit and quotation.
  • Manuscripts that have been published as copyrighted material elsewhere cannot be submitted. In addition, manuscripts under review by the journal should not be resubmitted to copyrighted publications. However, by submitting a manuscript, the author(s) retain the rights to the published material. In case of publication, they permit the use of their work under a CC-BY license, which allows others to copy, distribute and transmit the work as well as to adapt the work and to make commercial use of it.
  • Authors should not in general publish manuscripts describing essentially the same research or presenting essentially the same argument in more than one journal or primary publication.
  • Authors should not submit the same manuscript simultaneously to more than one publication at a time. This constitutes unethical publishing behavior and is unacceptable.
  • Authors submitting their works to Pessoa Plural for publication as original articles confirm that the submitted works represent their own contributions and have not been copied or plagiarized in whole or in part from other works without clearly citing the source. Authors should cite publications that have been influential in determining the nature of the submitted work.
  • Authorship should be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the paper. All those who have made significant contributions should be listed as co-authors.
  • Others who have participated in certain substantive aspects of the paper should be acknowledged or listed as contributors.
  • The corresponding author with the journal should ensure that all appropriate co-authors are included in the author list of the manuscript, and that there is a full consensus of all co-authors in approving the final version of the paper and its submission for publication.
  • Authors should disclose financial or other conflict of interest that might influence the results or interpretation of their manuscript. All sources of financial support should be disclosed.
  • When an author discovers a significant error or inaccuracy in his/her own published work, it is the author’s obligation to promptly notify the journal editors and cooperate with them to retract or correct the manuscript.

Reviewers’ Responsibilities

  • Peer review assists the editors and executive editorial board of Pessoa Plural in making editorial decisions and, through the editorial communication with the author, may also assist the author in improving the manuscript.
  • Any invited referee who feels unqualified to review the research reported in a manuscript or knows that its timely review will be impossible should immediately notify the editor so that alternative reviewers can be contacted.
  • Any manuscripts received for review must be treated as confidential documents.
  • Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and not used for personal advantage.
  • Reviewers must report to the editor of Pessoa Plural if they are aware of copyright infringement and plagiarism on the author’s part.
  • Reviewers should identify relevant published work that has not been cited by the authors. Any statement that an observation, derivation, or argument had been previously reported should be accompanied by the relevant citation. A reviewer should also call to the Editor's attention any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript under consideration and any other published paper of which they have personal knowledge.
  • Reviews should be conducted objectively, and observations should be formulated clearly with supporting arguments, so that authors can use them for improving the paper. Personal criticism of the author is unacceptable.
  • Reviewers should evaluate manuscripts exclusively on the basis of their academic and intellectual merit. The authors’ race, age, gender, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, disability, religious belief, citizenship, political orientation or social class must not be allowed to shape the evaluation process in any way.
  • Reviewers should not consider manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest resulting from: a) belonging to the same institution (department, research unit, university) and b) collaborating in the present on a joint project. In such cases, reviewers should immediately notify the editor so that alternative reviewers can be contacted.

Publisher's Responsibilities

As publisher of Pessoa Plural, the Brown University Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies:

  • Provides practical support to the editors and executive editorial board of Pessoa Plural so that they can follow the COPE Code of Conduct for Journal.
  • Ensures the autonomy of editorial decisions.
  • Protects intellectual property and copyright.
  • Ensures that good practice is maintained to the standards defined above.

Peer Review Process

Pessoa Plural—A Journal of Fernando Pessoa Studies is a multilingual international peer-reviewed scholarly journal. It was founded in 2012 and published its first issue in June of that year, launching two publications per year ever since (in June and December).

Pessoa Plural has four dedicated sections: articles, documents, book reviews, and tributes. The first three sections appear regularly in the journal's issues, while tributes are published only sporadically. Since December 2015, the journal has also launched themed issues inside regular issues, and the themed issues may have any or all of the regular journal four sections.

The contributions can be written in English, Portuguese or Spanish. There are no submission fees or article processing charges (APCs). Authors must follow the submission guidelines and take into consideration the review process of each journal section:

Articles
All submitted articles are initially screened by the editors. If a contribution is judged pertinent to the journal, then it is submitted to a process of double-blind peer review, following the "COPE Ethical Guidelines for Peer Reviewers" (v. 2, Sept. 2017). It is our aim to publish the best scholarship and criticism on Fernando Pessoa, regardless of theoretical, methodological or ideological perspective.
Documents
Submitted documents are generally screened by the editors only, though a document may undergo a blind peer review process in case deemed necessary by the editors.
Book Reviews
A member of the advisory board is the book review editor responsible for conducting in-depth analysis of the work of our network of scholars and providing the highest level of professional criticism. Pessoa Plural only publishes reviews commissioned by the editors. Unsolicited book reviews will not be considered. Books for review should be sent to the Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies, ℅ Onésimo Almeida, Box O | Brown University, Providence, RI – 02912, USA.
Tributes
Submitted tributes are generally screened by the editors only, though a tribute may undergo a blind peer review process in case deemed necessary by the editors.
Themed Issues
The journal combines general issues, which include material on any topics within our scope, with themed issues. Themed numbers appear as special issues inside regular numbers and are often edited by guest editors, who work together with the editorial committee but take the main responsibility for the contents. Papers inside themed issues must be subject to the same review process of papers in general issues, following the respective guidelines for articles, documents, book reviews, and tributes. To express an interest in editing a themed issue, please submit a formal proposal to the current editor-in-chief.
Plagiarism Policy
In addition to determining pertinence to the journal, the editors actively screen all submissions for plagiarism. Reviewers may also bring cases to the attention of the editors. Any case of suspected plagiarism is investigated fully. If the manuscript is determined to be plagiarized, in whole or in part, it is automatically rejected. At the discretion of the editors, authors may be given the option to revise and resubmit.

Copyright and Licensing Policy

Pessoa Plural is an open access* journal, offering immediate free and unlimited access to its contents upon publication. Authors retain the copyright to their work and associated publishing rights granted under copyright without restrictions for any text published by the journal, including the rights to reproduce, create derivatives of, redistribute, and publicly display and perform their work, and to license these rights to others. Thus, authors do not need to ask the journal for permission to use content of a work published in the journal in a thesis or publish a translation of their work with another publisher or use their work for teaching. In addition, authors are able to immediately self-archive their pre-print, post-print, and publisher's version of their respective articles and do not need to request permission from the journal. If reusing and/or archiving material published in Pessoa Plural in any form, authors must acknowledge first publication in the journal and link to the version of record.

By agreeing to having their work published in Pessoa Plural, authors acknowledge that they are the creators of the submitted work and possess the copyright and grant the journal a nonexclusive, irrevocable, royalty-free, paid-up, worldwide license to store, digitally preserve, and disseminate their work, including publication on the journal's website and deposit in any digital repositories used by the journal, in any printed editions, and/or in anthologies of works previously published in the journal. All texts (including articles, documents, reviews, and tributes) are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License. The CC BY-SA 4.0 License permits use, distribution, and reproduction of the text, provided proper attribution is given and the resulting material is distributed under the same license as the original.

* Following the definition used by the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), Pessoa Plural understands 'open access journals' as publications that use a funding model that does not charge readers or their institutions for access. From the definition of 'open access' established by the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI) in 2002, users have the right to 'read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of these articles…or use them for any other lawful purpose'.
