Portuguese and Brazilian Studies

Visiting Professorships

The Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies offers two visiting professorships.

FLAD/Brown Visiting Professorship

Since 1993, the Luso-American Foundation (FLAD) and the Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies have maintained a vibrant cooperation agreement under whose auspices Brown has hosted Visiting Professors in Portuguese Studies in the areas of Anthropology, Sociology, Political Science and History. This program is officially known as the FLAD/Brown Visiting Professorship.

Thanks to this agreement, a sizeable number of Portuguese scholars have spent one semester or a year teaching and conducting research at Brown, while availing themselves of the opportunity to participate in conferences, lecture at other universities, and join research groups in their areas of expertise.

The mission of the FLAD is to promote the development of Portugal, the Portuguese and the Portuguese-descendant communities through a close cooperation with the United States of America. They are a bridge between the two countries, focusing on Science, Education, Culture and Transatlantic Relations.

The FLAD/Brown agreement has been invaluable to Brown University and particularly to the Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies in a variety of ways:

    • The Department has been able to expand its course offerings in the areas of the Social Sciences (Anthropology, Sociology, and Political Science), International Relations and Contemporary History for undergraduate students as well as for graduate students pursuing master's and doctoral degrees.
    • Many Brown students have benefitted from small grants to conduct research in Portugal and participate in scholarly conferences, thus deepening their knowledge about and contact with Portuguese culture.
    • The number and variety of cultural events related to Portugal and the Portuguese-speaking African countries, including colloquia, conferences, symposia and films has been greatly expanded.
    • Targeted funds have allowed the university to acquire books and films about Portuguese culture beyond what is provided by our library budget.
    • FLAD funds have also supported projects associated with Gávea-Brown Publications.

The 2023 - 2024 FLAD Visiting Professor and Lecturers are Aurora Santos (Fall) and Duncan Simpson (Spring).
