Portuguese and Brazilian Studies

Publications

The Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies houses/sponsors five academic journals. The department is also home to Gávea-Brown Publications, which has published books and journals on Portuguese and Portuguese-American studies, including literature, art, culture and translations.

Academic Journals

BRASIL/BRAZIL publishes scholarly articles on Brazilian literature and in Comparative Literature with a focus on Brazilian literature, as well as book reviews, interviews with writers, English language translations of Brazilian literature and original prose and poetry by Brazilian authors.
The e-Journal of Portuguese History (e-JPH) is an international peer-reviewed scholarly journal with the objective of providing publication of work on historical subjects, especially those concerning themes and topics of Portuguese history analyzed in a comparative perspective.
The mission of the Gávea-Brown: A Bilingual Journal of Portuguese-North American Letters and Studies (ISSN: 2641-0400) is to publish works relating to the Portuguese experience in North America. The scope is broad, including editorially reviewed academic articles, documents, interviews, translations, book reviews and creative works (both literary and visual).
The Journal of Lusophone Studies is the official journal of the American Portuguese Studies Association. It is peer-reviewed and published twice a year. In keeping with the founding principles of APSA, the journal strives to foster the expansion and diffusion of knowledge on the peoples and cultures of Portuguese-speaking countries and diasporas. It achieves this by publishing the scholarly work of APSA members.
Pessoa Plural—A Journal of Fernando Pessoa Studies (ISSN: 2212-4179) is an international peer-reviewed scholarly journal dedicated to studies of Fernando Pessoa. It is published jointly by the Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies at Brown University, the Department of English and Comparative Literary Studies at Warwick University and the Department of Humanities and Literature of the University of the Andes.

Journals@BDR

The Journals@BDR collection is a growing archive of academic journals published by Brown University. The project began in 2017 as a partnership between Brown University Library and the Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies (POBS). As a pilot, it received a Cogut Foundation Humanities Initiative seed grant to: 1) archive the four periodicals published by POBS; 2) provide a model to other journals interested in being archived and published through the BDR; and 3) involve students in the project, by exposing them to the editorial process and providing them with the necessary training to assist with the continuous archiving and publication of those journals. As the pilot completes its goals, the collection welcomes any other Brown University journals that meet the criteria for being archived, which include: a review of editorial policies, the capacity to fund student involvement, and a commitment to open access.

The Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies' journals were the first archived and published in Journals@BDR and played an important part in creating the templates and best practices for this open access program.

Gávea-Brown Publications

Gávea-Brown Publications was founded in 1980 under the auspices of the Center for Portuguese and Brazilian Studies at Brown University with the purpose of making Portuguese literature and culture better known in the English-speaking world.

With such a broad and ambitious objective, its plan was to publish titles in such diverse areas as:

  1. Translations of Portuguese literature;
  2. Works relating to Portuguese Studies;
  3. Original creative works, in English or in Portuguese, which in some way reflect the interactions of Portuguese and North American cultures, particularly those offering insight into the experience of the Portuguese in the United States, Canada and North America generally

Gávea-Brown Publications books can be found at the Brown Bookstore. In addition, we periodically work with other publishers. Gávea-Brown Publications also publishes Gávea-Brown: A Bilingual Journal of Portuguese-North American Letters and Studies.
