Submission Guidelines for Gávea-Brown

When preparing your materials, please adhere to the general and genre-specific submission guidelines below. We accept a variety of works relating to the Portuguese experience in North America: articles, documents, fiction, nonfiction (essays, memoir, diary), interviews, book reviews, translations, and poetry.  Submissions should be addressed to onesimo_almeida@brown.edu. Please reach out if you have any questions. If you are new to Gávea-Brown, please consult our archive of past issues (for free!) to become acquainted with our journal. 

Deadline for the Spring issue: February 1st 
Deadline for the Fall issue: August 1st

General guidelines

  • Page size: US Letter (8.5 x 11 inches)
  • Margins: 1 inch on all sides (top, bottom, left, right)
  • All text: Garamond; body: 12pt; footers/captions: 10pt; single spaced with justified margins.
  • Indentations: 0.25 of an inch for paragraphs, .5 of an inch for block quotes
  • Texts in Portuguese should adhere to the Novo Acordo Ortográfico.
  • All text, whether in English or Portuguese, should be spell-checked before submitting.
  • Use APA style for formatting quotes and citations, including a Reference/Bibliography page that follows APA guidelines.
  • In addition to including your images inline with the text so we know where to place them, please send images as separate .jpg files (to ensure their quality). All images must be original, used with permission, or compliant with copyright and fair use laws. Proper attribution is required for all non-original visual material.
  • All submissions should be sent as a .docx attachment.

Articles

  • Provide an abstract of 250 words or less in both English and Portuguese.
  • Provide 3-5 keywords in both English and Portuguese.
  • Be sure your references page adheres to APA formatting requirements.
  • Here is an example article you can read.

Poems

  • For poems that require specific formatting that may not be preserved in Word (e.g. line breaks), feel free to send as both .docx and .pdf versions.

Interviews

  • All interviewer questions should be in bold, and the document should include clear indications of when the speaker changes (for example, this interview).
