Biography

Heloisa is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies at Brown University, where she is also affiliated with CLACS. Her doctoral research investigates alternative political imaginaries in contemporary Latin American cultural production, focusing on the gendered and racialized dimensions of state violence. She examines how these factors intersect with democratic ideals, especially within carceral systems, and their colonial and authoritarian legacies.

She holds an M.A. in Literary Studies from the Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR) and an LL.B. in Law from the same institution. She is also a licensed attorney with the Brazilian Bar Association.

Before joining Brown, Heloisa contributed to digital humanities projects related to Brazilian literature and arts at Brazil LAB at Princeton University. During law school, she engaged in projects addressing the intersections of gender, sexuality, and penal abolitionism within Brazil’s prison system.
