Inês is an art historian and cultural critic focused on the visual culture, public memory, and the afterlives of colonialism in the Luso-Afro-Brazilian world. Currently, she is an integrated researcher at ICNOVA, FCSH, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, and, next Spring, she will be a research fellow at the Clark Art Institute. She has been working in documentary films that explore the relation of cinema with other arts and has taught decolonial art history at Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema and media and cultural analysis at New York University.
Inês holds a PhD in Media, Culture and Communication (specialization in Visual Culture and Memory Studies) from New York University, an MA in Contemporary Art History from Nova University of Lisbon, and a BA in History and Art History from the University of Lisbon. Committed to public scholarship, her publications also include articles in international peer-reviewed academic journals and book chapters in prestigious edited volumes. She is the author of the book “Sob o Olhar de Deuses sem Vergonha:” Cultura Visual e Paisagens Contemporâneas (2009) and is presently preparing the monograph Thinking Visually: The Afterlives of Portuguese Imperialism.
This semester, Inês will be teaching a course entitled Challenging the Colonial Complex: Theory and Praxis in the Portuguese-speaking world.
