Biography

Born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil, Yasmin Siqueira is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies. She holds a master's degree in Romance Languages from the University of Georgia, as well as a bachelor's degree and teaching degree in Language and Literature (Portuguese and English) from the University of São Paulo. During the 2023-2024 academic year, she served as a Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant in Portuguese at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. Her research interests include women's writing, Afro-Brazilian literature, the environmental humanities, life writing, and literature and cinema. Outside academia, she enjoys traveling, spending quality time with family and friends, savoring good food, exploring new places, and photography.

Teaching

Yasmin Siqueira has over fourteen years of experience teaching Portuguese and English in Brazil and the United States. 

  • Served as Instructor of Record and Teaching Assistant at the University of Georgia (2024-2026), teaching undergraduate Portuguese courses, tutoring students in the Portuguese Flagship Program, coordinating language support initiatives, and contributing as Content Editor of the award-winning bilingual magazine Fala Aí!
  • Worked as a Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant at Spelman College (2023-2024), supporting Portuguese instruction, organizing cultural events, facilitating virtual exchanges between U.S. and Brazilian students. 
  • In Brazil, taught English for over a decade at Associação Cultura Inglesa São Paulo and PBF, working with learners of all ages and proficiency levels, preparing students for Cambridge English examinations, conducting placement assessments, and assuming academic leadership and school liaison responsibilities.
     

Awards

Recipient of the Honorable Mention Award by the Department of Romance Languages at the University of Georgia for her article “Um olhar para o ‘eu’ do passado: Mapeando a identidade pessoal e social da voz narrativa em Guia afetivo da periferia” published in Opiniães” (2025).

Recipient of the PORT-LACSI Brazilian Studies Research Grant from the Portuguese Program and the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Institute (LACSI) at the University of Georgia (2026).
